Habitat engineers

Fallow deer, Soay and Badger Faces use mouth, feet and horns to disturb, graze and open up ground — restarting the forces of habitat regeneration that machinery can only imitate.

Birds and small mammals

Birds of prey overhead, over 12 species of bat including the grey long-eared, and two of our most endangered mammals — the hazel dormouse and the water vole. Weasel, fox, and badger roam freely.

Insects and pollinators

The base of the whole pyramid: bees, butterflies, beetles, hoverflies and fungi. Get these right and everything above them follows — which is exactly why they're the easiest place for you to start at home.
